Overview

The 1993 vintage sees the 21st consecutive release of Black Label, our iconic flagship and the first ultra-premium wine made by Wolf Blass, with the aim to create the finest red blend from the vintage.

The philosophy behind Black Label is simple: to take the year’s very best wines and weave them together into a synergistic whole, the resultant wine being greater than the sum of its parts. It’s about creating a wine with many layers of flavour in a complex composition of intense fruit characters, magnificent structure, a rich lustrous texture, long velvety tannins and a lingering palate.

Fruit for Black Label is chosen solely on the basis of its intensity of flavour and potential for longevity. Individual parcels were crushed separately. After a warm fermentation to extract colour and tannin, which was finished in oak, the wine was pressed, racked and matured in new American and French oak for a further 30 months prior to bottling.

Flavours and Palate

Buoyant and fresh with dark chocolate and dark berry flavours and fine, loose-knit al dente tannins, finishing chalky and firm. Soft, supple and rich in style and still shows good fruit complexity.

South Australia

Home to the oldest vines in the country, and no less than 18 wine growing regions, South Australia accounts for almost 50% of Australia’s wine production. The Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and Coonawarra are well known for their world class reds, with Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley and Eden Valley praised for their exceptional Chardonnay and Riesling.

The lead up to the 1993 vintage saw the wettest growing conditions for more than 50 years, with rains continuing through to January. Fortunately, this was followed by a warm, dry harvest in March and April, with a late finish to the vintage.
