Gold Label Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2016

Gold Label Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2016

Overview

Overview

Gold label Adelaide Hills Chardonnay is the supreme expression of region & variety. The nose displays enticing aromas of stone fruits, honeydew melon and a hint of grapefruit, while the palate is rich & balanced, with a fine acid line.

To create the Wolf Blass Gold Label collection, our winemakers select the definitive varieties of the very best South Australian wine regions to produce a range of progressive, elegant wines that showcase both regional and varietal excellence.

Our Adelaide Hills vineyards grow elegant, complex Chardonnays with clarity of fruit and regional expression. Select parcels of fruit were hand picked and whole-bunch pressed before fermentation in small batches using a combination of wild and cultured yeast and natural malo-lactic fermentation. The wine was left to mature on lees with regular barrel stirring to build texture and complexity.

Adelaide Hills, South Australia

The Adelaide Hills is one of Australia’s younger wine regions, but it’s as savvy as its famous Sauv Blanc. With a cool climate and high altitude, its dynamic winemakers are also responsible for top notch Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The season began very dry, with a warm spring promoting strong canopy growth, and a moderate November ensuring good fruit set. Timely January rains refreshed the vines and allowed for good yields without impacting quality. A very mild Fe bruary with cold nights slowed ripening, and warm March days with cool nights helped concentrate bright, elegant flavours while retaining long, fine acidity.

John Ashwell - Winemaker

John's passion for the wine industry was nurtured early on by his parents, through their own interest in grape growing and determination to set up a successful boutique winery.

As John got older he went on to manage his parents' vineyard in Queensland, located 800 metres above sea level on the Great Dividing Range. For the next two years John followed the annual cycle of grape vines with keen interest, before deciding it was time to learn how to turn grapes into wine.

He enrolled in a Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine Science) at Charles Sturt University in 2003, and the following years saw John studying while working in Central Victoria, the Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley and Sonoma County in California.

Returning to Australia for vintage in 2008, he decided South Australia was where he would be best placed to continue his winemaking education, so he packed his car with all his belongings and hit the road.

John started at Wolf Blass as a Vintage Winemaker in 2009, and has been working with us ever since. The range of wine styles and winemaking options available are a constant source of inspiration to him, and help drive his determination to ensure every wine under his care is the best it can possibly be.
