AS Billy Slater's illustrious career draws to a close, the champion reflects on the highs and lows of 16 seasons in the National Rugby League.
“Whenever something is taken away from you, the drive to get it back is always greater,” he said. “The Chase for me is that moment you sit in the shed with your teammates after you’ve achieved something.
“The result of 2017 was probably one of my most successful years to date, collectively with my teams but individually as well.
“The drive for me is to become the best that I can be. I’ve always measured my performances from past performances, not so much against other people.”
Following the end of the 2018 season, the 34-year-old fullback has given some thoughts to his post-career legacy.
“My career nearly finished two and a half years ago, and although I would have been very disappointed to finish my career like that, I’m very content with what I have achieved in this game,” he said.
“I’m proud of being competitive, I’m proud of wanting to be in the game all the time. If I can leave (the game with) an impression of competitiveness and that will to win, I’ll be happy with that.
