Veraison in red grapesThe record breaking late winter and spring rain across most of central South Australia has ensured that soil profiles are very full and all dams overflowing, which has guaranteed an abundance of water when required across summer.

Spring and early summer were also quite cool without being cold. That delayed budburst and subsequent flowering, but enabled plenty of healthy vine growth and plentiful fruit set.

Summer has continued to deliver unseasonal rainfall but with more sunshine hours than what would be regarded as a cold wet summer. This has meant that the vines are very healthy and in no rush to race through veraison (grape colour change) to bring about the onset of what will be a very long fruit ripening process.

Vintage across almost all regions is destined to be much later than most recent years and with the healthy vines, cool soils and plentiful fruit, with balanced bunch numbers and berry size, we are expecting a long steady harvest period that should provide some great wines in 2017.
